Quarantine Issued in Delaware for the Spotted Lanternfly

The Spotted Laternfly

The Spotted Laternfly

On February 28, 2019, the DE Department of Agriculture signed Emergency Regulations for Spotted Lanternfly that has enacted a quarantine for this pest. Spotted lanternfly, Lycorma delicata, is a threat to Delaware and the US, as it is a destructive, invasive plant hopper that attacks many hosts including forests, ornamental trees, orchards, hops, and grapes. This insect is detrimental to Delaware's agricultural industries, the environment, and residential areas.

The quarantine is in place to prevent the movement of spotted lanternfly in Delaware and the surrounding states and to eradicate and control the spotted lanternfly population currently present in the quarantined area. You may download a guide for residents or for more information on the state's efforts to locate and control the proliferation of this insect, visit https://agriculture.delaware.gov/plant-industries/spotted-lanternfly/.

 The following zip codes in northern New Castle County have been quarantined in their entirety: 19702, 19703, 19707, 19711, 19801, 19802, 19803, 19805, 19807, 19809, 19810

Pot et Fleur Workshop, January 23, 2017

FLORAL DESIGN, FLOWER SHOWWendy Russell

The Horticulture and Flower Show Committee organized a hands-on workshop demonstrating a style of flower arrangement, which combines potted, rooted plants with cut flowers. Pot et Fleur combines two or more potted plants growing in soil or other medium with cut flowers in the same container. Beverley Rowland demonstrated how this classic design can be composed using today's easy-care plants to bring a slice of nature indoors and create a long-lasting arrangement.

Centennial Celebration

A festive Centennial Celebration is planned for Tuesday evening, October 3, 2017, to mark the first hundred years of The Garden Club of Wilmington. The multifaceted event will be held at the spectacular Longwood Gardens and will include a cocktail party, specialty hors d’oeuvres, and a presentation by nationally known speaker Bunny Williams.

Building on a tradition of horticultural education, design excellence, and community involvement, members of the Garden Club of Wilmington (GCW) will gather to enjoy the excitement of achieving a centennial as a club and celebrate the friendships and shared interests that make the GCW a dynamic and rewarding organization.

While the GCW is the star of the evening, our featured speaker, Bunny Williams, is the ideal guest to remind us of the challenges and rewards of enriching both individual lives and communities through the creation of inviting gardens and interiors. Widely known for her flair for the telling detail and use of layered treasures and colors, Bunny has applied the principles of design to large gardens and intimate greenscapes as well as to interiors ranging from the restrained to the magnificent, always achieving a sense of welcome. She has worked on projects to benefit historic houses, written widely on gardening and interior design, and developed collections of outdoor furniture, tableware, and furniture for interior spaces. Her informal talk will be inspiring and entertaining, reminding us of the value of good design in everyday life.

The Centennial Celebration: an evening of excitement, education, and fun: a microcosm of the Garden Club of Wilmington’s first one hundred years.
