We'll be reading the book Spying on the South: An Odyssey Across the American Divide” by Tony Horwitz, who researched Olmstead’s travels and spent several years following his travels. Olmsted’s experiences over 14 months in the American South ultimately influenced his views on the accessibility of public spaces for everyone and are reflected in his future career as America’s first landscape architect. The book is a fascinating, painful and sometimes hilarious look at the south of the 1850s and compares Olmsted’s writings about the slave and free states on the cusp of civil war with Horwitz’s experience navigating today’s red and blue states. In the meantime, please consider ordering the book and get a jump start on reading it. Questions? Contact Lynne Swartz.
